Mar de Plástico

(2015)

In the far Southwest of Spain, about 20 kilometers from the ancient city of Almeria, lays the so called ‘Mar de Plástico’. It’s a gigantic area that owes Its name to the thousands white greenhouses that fill the landscape. They’re even visible from space. The vegetables harvested in these plastic greenhouses are meant for export to most countries in Northern and Western Europe. They can produce at low cost because of the ideal climate and due to the low wages for laborers coming from Africa and Eastern Europe. The foreign workers make a meager €30-35 a day and a lot of them live in self made shacks in-between the greenhouses.
